Anna Karenina
Synopsis
Anna, married and restless in Petersburg society, begins an affair that the same society will not forgive in a woman. Beside her story Tolstoy sets Levin, a landowner trying to make a decent life out of work, doubt, and marriage. The two plots are the novel’s real argument about what happiness is allowed to look like.
